Post Road Iron Works: Custom Railing Systems

Post Road Iron Works is a company specializing in structural and ornamental metalwork. The company has designed various structures and has worked on a diverse range of railing solutions in locations such as Yankee Stadium, NASDAQ, MTA subway station, and the FDR boardwalk. The company as a whole has received excellent feedback from almost all clients that have hired them in the past, and continue to design functional railing systems for commercial and residential applications all around the country.

The FDR Boardwalk, located in South Beach Staten Island, utilizes a railing system designed by Post Road Iron Works. The railings are constructed from painted steel and include six horizontal rails placed underneath the main handrail. These additional rails are meant to increase the stability of the railing as a whole and also prevent boardwalk users from climbing under the railing in order to access the beach.

Post Road Iron Works designs a wide range of custom made railing systems which they design in conjunction with the specifications and needs of the client. They have designed systems for an abundance of different environments, and have experience in designing solutions specifically for boardwalks. Post Road Iron Works can provide a viable solution catered to the specific needs of the  Avon Walkway railing system.

Wagner Companies: Boardwalk Railing

Wagner Companies strives to recreate the mood of "Historical Boardwalk Railings". Their railings are constructed of aluminum and are connected at joints and vertices. All Wagner railing systems are made in the U.S.A. and the aluminum is produced from 100% recycled post industrial product.

Wagner Companies provide two viable railing system solutions for the new Avon walkway. The Wagnerail is made of 100% recycled aluminum connected at joints will ball fittings. The Wagnerail is the most popular railing system made by Wagner due to it's rigid construction, rust resistant materials and relatively inexpensive design. The Kalamazoo rail is similar in material and style to the Wagnerail but is coated with a protective black sealant over the aluminum to further enhance durability. The Kalamazoo Rail is also designed in order to be placed on inclines/ declines such as stairs, ramps or natural changes in elevation. The Kalamazoo Rail is substantially more expensive than the Wagnerail.

Both solutions provide a viable option for the railing system that is to be implemented on the new walkway. The Wagnerail can only be used on level surfaces since there is no design for changes in elevation such as on stairs or ramps. The Kalamazoo rail is designed to be placed on changes in elevation but is more expensive than the Wagnerail. Aside from these drawback, both railing systems provide a classic looking, environmentally friendly solution for a railing system to be placed on the new Avon Walkway.

Alt Solutions: Main Bldg Connection

 Alternate Solutions: Main Building Connection

Solution A: Spike Drop Connection. This solution functions as a direct connection from the walkway support system to the building. Spikes are embedded in the concrete support system, and the building is fitted with brackets

Solution B: Drop Through Connection. This solution requires concrete columns attached to the base of each corner of the building. As building is lowered onto specified site, columns insert into pre drilled holes through concrete support system.

Solution C: Slotted Construction. Buildings using slotted construction will have slits cut to the width of the concrete column supports. The building will be lowered onto the supports and then attached with additional rebar/ bolt connection.

Solution D: Bi- Planar Connection. At the base of each building utilizing this solution, two concrete beams will be placed parallel to the support beams. When the building is lowered onto the specified site, the parallel beams will fall adjacent to the inside of the support beams. The building will be attached on both the X and Y planes (Horizontal and Vertical planes) providing a more rigid connection.
