(1) Background Information. (Summer '13)

Background Information:

Real Life Problem:

In October of 2013 Hurricane Sandy struck the East coast and devastated hundreds of oceanfront towns. Among these towns was the town of Avon. During the storm the Avon boardwalk and beachfront area was completely destroyed. During the summer months, this boardwalk and beach is a huge source of revenue for the small town of Avon. Because of this, the town is willing to pay for the construction of a new boardwalk, designed to withstand natural super storms in the future.

Simulated Situation:

The Simulated situation will be to design a replacement boardwalk for the Avon Beach. This boardwalk will include public facilities such as restrooms, benches, and  gazebos. The electrical system for the boardwalk  will be completely self sustaining by using hydroelectric power harvested from the nearby inlet. The boardwalk will also have storm resistant features to prevent destruction in the future.
